Cancer Support

Integrative Oncology & Using Acupuncture for Cancer

If you or a loved one is facing cancer, it's important to have hope, and Earley Wellness wants to help give you that hope. In many cases, cancer can be treated, especially when detected early. There are more treatments available now than ever to cure cancer or to slow its spread, relieve symptoms, and help you live a healthier life. A central aim of acupuncture is to use it as a form of integrative oncology to reinvigorate and balance the life energy of the body.

At Earley Wellness Group, our practitioners have focused on the use of acupuncture for cancer patients in both their academic studies and in their clinical practice, working intensively with patients in all phases of cancer treatment and recovery. As practitioners, we believe that our role is to provide adjunctive therapy, that is, to support and complement, rather than replace, existing medical treatment.

During our initial session, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan and set specific health goals. Over time, we will track our progress by using specific benchmarks to help you deal more effectively with both the illness and the side effects of treatments. If interested, we are more than willing to consult with your oncologist to develop a collaborative treatment plan.

How Do We Use Acupuncture for Cancer Support?

It is important to remember that when it comes to integrative oncology, acupuncture doesn’t aim to replace Western medicine. Acupuncture helps cancer patients to deal more effectively with both the illness and the side effects of treatments.

  • Alleviate nausea and vomiting
  • Relieve excessive body heat and hot flashes
  • Revitalize your body's energy
  • Detoxify from heavy drugs
  • Provide relief from pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, and stress

While acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be extremely helpful in addressing many physiological concerns associated with cancer and cancer treatment, it can also help a person cope with the emotional and psychological challenges as well. Acupuncture in conjuncture with Chinese herbs treats the body, but it also supports the mind, emotions, and spirit. Acupuncture patients often report a greater sense of well-being and improved self-confidence in their ability to cope with cancer.

Studies Support Acupuncture

According to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2008, 39% of cancer patients who received regular acupuncture treatments reported improvements in pain. In a 2002 study by Duke University, acupuncture was compared to Zofran in controlling nausea in cancer patients. Acupuncture was found to work better than Zofran. It was just as effective as Zofran, but had fewer side effects and was less expensive.
